1. Remove old sealer and scrape off loose, flakey paint with a shave hook.

2. Tape over or remove locks, hinges, doorknobs, catches or handles.

3. Give your woodwork a good clean with a degreaser to remove all traces of dirt, dust and grease and then let it dry.

4. Lightly sand the wood down and wipe it again to remove the dust.

5. Mask off any edges where glass meets the frame using a putty knife to tuck the tape neatly into the corners. Keep your knife pushed into place and tear the tape for crisp neat lines.

6. Mask edges of the frame that meet the wall.

7. Apply fresh new sealer around the edges where any glass meets the wood and smooth it out with a sponge. Refer to packaging for information on drying times.

8. Apply one coat of wood primer to give the topcoats a smooth surface to go on.
Top tip:
If you’re painting a door, start with a brush for the detailed parts and then switch to a small roller for the larger areas. Use upward strokes to avoid dripping.

9. Once dry, paint the door or frame with your chosen color and don’t forget to give your paint a good stir before starting! You’ll need to apply two coats and consult the can for information on drying times between them. If the color change is strong, for example from navy to white, then more coats may be required.

10. Remove masking tape carefully and clean any paint that has got onto the glass. Remember, newly painted doors and windows should not be closed until the paint is fully dry.
