As we enter the 11th month of the pandemic, ‘Working From Home’ has been deemed as the ‘new normal’ even after lockdown opens. While Working From Home’ is convenient, there’s a very thin line between it and “Living At Work”. We need to make sure that we are doing the former and not the latter. After all, it isn’t easy for all of us to live and work in the same space. However, with offices not opening anytime soon & also the newly-developed habit of occasionally conducting business from your home office, you can benefit from optimising your workspace for serious productivity using these tips.

Ergonomics is Everything

‘Ergonomics’ is the buzzword when we’re talking about buying objects for the long haul. But what does it actually mean? The word ergonomics comes from the Greek word “ergon” which means work and “nomos” which means laws. It's essentially the “laws of work” or “science of work”. So now before you go online and start splurging on Ergonomic chairs and tables make sure you’re already following some rules that we’ve laid down below-

  • The top of your computer screen should be at eye level or a little below. As you scan down the screen, your eye lids will naturally close a bit and moisten, which in turn reduces eye fatigue.
  • The Position your keyboard should be such that your forearms are parallel to the floor.
  • Your chair should be adjusted so your feet rest firmly on something–the floor, or a footrest if you’re short.

Your Office Your Rules

According to a study from the University of Exeter, making design decisions about your workspace improves productivity, as well as health and happiness. In fact, the participants were found to have increased productivity of 32%. Plant personal keepsakes around your workspace to keep you motivated and happy. These individual touches will make you more comfortable in your space, which boosts productivity.

Have A Green Day

Being indoors everyday could make you feel lethargic and gloomy. Choosing the right paint colours for your home office can stimulate your creativity and productivity. According to some Feng shui experts, green is associated with growth and decisiveness. It gives one the feeling of being outside, indoors. You can either paint some Mint Green patches in your home office or literally add a breath of fresh air with a bunch of indoor plants that will not only add aesthetic appeal but also purify your air.

Get Sun Kissed

When setting up office at home, you have the luxury of choosing where your desk is located to optimize light levels and natural light. Strategically locating your office desk where you receive abundant natural light will surely boost your productivity. FYI, windows that face towards the south give you abundant sunshine, which is especially important during the winter months.

Light The Night

You’re really lucky if this doesn’t concern you, but some of us have to crunch a few extra hours after sundown to complete our tasks for the day. Even with great natural light, a table lamp would do no harm as most overhead house lighting is inadequate for work. Try a few table lamps, which offer a nice soft glow and interesting design possibilities.
