There’s a surprising reason why a room painted purple feels luxurious
The color purple has been associated with royalty, power, and wealth for centuries. The rich history of this color can be traced back to the ancient Phoenicians, who discovered a way to extract an intense purple-red dye from a small species of sea snail found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean Sea.
However, producing the rich purple dye was an incredibly expensive process. It took around 10,000 snails to produce just one gram of the dye, making it a luxury item that only kings, queens, and emperors could afford. As a result, clothing and textiles dyed purple became a symbol of wealth and status.
But purple wasn't just associated with wealth and power. It also came to represent spirituality, as the ancient rulers who adorned themselves and their homes in purple were often thought of as gods or descendants of gods.
Today, you don't need to be a king or queen to add a touch of luxury to your home with purple. Here are some ways to incorporate this regal hue into your space:
For a bold statement, paint a room in a deep shade of royal purple. This works particularly well in a study or library, creating a sophisticated and powerful atmosphere.
For a modern twist on a traditional color, consider pairing purple with metallic accents like gold or silver. A purple and gold color scheme creates a regal and glamorous atmosphere, perfect for a formal living room or bedroom.
If you prefer a more subtle approach, use purple as an accent color in your decor. Add purple throw pillows, curtains, or artwork to a neutral-colored room to create a sense of luxury and sophistication.
When choosing a shade of purple, keep in mind that cooler hues like lavender and lilac work well in bedrooms and other relaxing spaces, while warmer hues like eggplant or plum work better in more formal areas like dining rooms and studies.
Don't be afraid to mix different shades of purple in the same room. Pairing lighter shades with darker shades can create a sense of depth and complexity in space. Just be sure to balance out the purple with plenty of neutral colors to avoid overwhelming the room.
Incorporating purple into your home decor is a great way to evoke a sense of royalty and luxury. And the best part? You don't need to collect sea snails to do it.
